Privacy Policy
PoshanPal ("we", "our", "the app") is operated by Mohit Nigam. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we protect it — with specific attention to children's information as required by India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act).
1. What we collect

We do not collect location data, contacts, call logs, or financial information.
2. How we use your data
- Calculate daily nutrition from meal descriptions, photos, and barcodes
- Provide personalized meal suggestions, recipes, and food suitability checks
- Send nutrition reminders and daily progress summaries
- Improve food recognition quality over time
- Maintain your kitchen calibration and household preferences
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell your data.
3. AI processing
PoshanPal uses Google's Gemini AI to:
- Parse meal descriptions into structured food items
- Analyze food photos and nutrition labels
- Estimate portion sizes and food density
- Generate meal suggestions and recipes
- Assess packaged food suitability for your child
AI processing happens through secure Firebase Cloud Functions. Your meal descriptions and photos are sent to Google's Gemini API for analysis. Google's AI data usage policies apply to this processing. We do not use your data to train AI models.
4. Data storage and security
- All data is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) with encryption at rest and in transit
- Authentication is handled by Firebase Authentication with Google Sign-In
- API keys and AI credentials are stored in Firebase Secret Manager, never on your device
- Photos are stored in Firebase Cloud Storage with access restricted to your account
- Local caches (AsyncStorage) on your device contain non-sensitive food data for offline use
5. Children's privacy
PoshanPal is designed for parents and caregivers to follow their children's nutrition journey. We take children's data seriously:
- Parental consent: Only authenticated adults (via Google Sign-In) can create child profiles and enter data about children
- Data minimization: We collect only what is necessary for nutrition guidance — name, age, gender, allergies, and growth context
- No direct child interaction: Children do not use the app directly or create their own accounts
- Purpose limitation: Child data is used solely for nutrition analysis and food guidance within the app
- Right to erasure: Parents can delete any child's profile and all associated data at any time (see Section 7)
In accordance with the DPDP Act, 2023, we process children's personal data only with verifiable parental consent provided through the parent's authenticated account.
6. Data sharing
We share data only with:

We do not share data with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third parties.
7. Data retention and deletion
Account deletion for PoshanPal: PoshanPal is operated by Mohit Nigam. If you use the PoshanPal app and want your account deleted, you can request deletion by email.
How to request account deletion
- Email mohit.k.nigam@gmail.com from the email address used for your PoshanPal account.
- Use the subject line: PoshanPal account deletion request.
- Include your registered email address and confirm that you want your PoshanPal account and associated app data deleted.
We will confirm the request and complete account deletion within 30 days after verifying the registered email address. The Android app also provides self-service deletion under Settings.
Data deleted
- Your PoshanPal account profile, including name, email, and profile photo from Google Sign-In
- Child profiles, including name, age, gender, allergies, and growth context
- Meal logs, meal photos, voice recordings, nutrition history, and saved meal notes
- Kitchen measurements, utensil sizes, staple preferences, recipes, and meal-plan history tied to your account
- Caregiver relationships and sharing records connected to your account
- Care journal entries, prescription images or notes, supplement logs, reminders, and device notification tokens connected to your account
Data retained and retention period
- Backup copies may remain in encrypted Firebase backups for up to 30 days before they expire through the normal backup lifecycle.
- Security, abuse-prevention, and service logs may be retained for up to 90 days, unless a longer period is required to meet legal obligations or resolve a security issue.
- Anonymized or aggregated food aliases, density estimates, and product-improvement data that cannot reasonably identify you or your child may be retained.
You can also delete individual meals or child profiles inside PoshanPal where those controls are available. Full account deletion removes all associated personal data from our active systems within 30 days. Village contributions may remain only in anonymized form so existing conversations remain understandable; your account identifier and displayed identity are removed.
8. Your rights
Under the DPDP Act, 2023, you have the right to:
- Access — know what personal data we hold about you
- Correction — update or correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — request deletion of your data
- Grievance redressal — raise concerns about data handling

9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Significant changes will be communicated through the app. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
